UFC has exploded in popularity across New York in recent years as the state has hosted many of the biggest fights ever seen. It all began in 2016, when New York revoked a long-standing professional MMA ban that had prevented UFC from hosting bouts in the Empire State. UFC president Dana White reacted swiftly, bringing a the biggest fight card in the organization’s history to Madison Square Garden for UFC 205 in November 2016. It lived up to the hype, as superstar Conor McGregor knocked out Eddie Alvarez to become the first fighter in the promotion’s history to hold titles in two divisions simultaneously.
Tyron Woodley drew in a title fight with Stephen Thompson in the co-main event, while Joanna Jedrzejczyk also successfully defended her title against Karolina Kowalkiewicz. The top class action has continued ever since then, culminating when
Georges St-Pierre recorded a stunning victory over Michael Bisping at Madison Square Garden at UFC 217 in 2017. UFC’s popularity has soared accordingly in that time. It helps that fans have been able to cheer on several local stars, including the legendary Jon Jones from Endicott, Phil Baroni and Al Iaquinta from Long Island, Rashad Evans from Niagara Falls, Neil Magny from Brooklyn and Ricco Rodriguez from Staten Island, among many others.
UFC has amassed legions of fans in such a short space of time due to the frenetic action it provides and the colorful characters it attracts. It is thrilling to watch an MMA contest take place, but that thrill is dialled up several notches if you have money riding on the outcome. UFC betting has therefore gone through the roof in New York in recent times. Here are the key bets to be aware of:
UFC Moneyline Betting
This is by far and away the most important type of wager on UFC. It simply entails choosing which fighter will win and laying down money on your chosen gladiator. The sportsbook will assign a set of odds on each fighter depending on their relative strengths and how evenly matched they are. If you had been looking forward to UFC 223 in Brooklyn and you believed local fighter Iaquinta could defeat Khabib Nurmagomedov, you would have been given very generous odds before the fight. A $100 bet on Iaquinta beating Khabib would have netted you a healthy profit of $525.
Khabib was unbeaten heading into the fight and carried a fearsome reputation, so he was the heavy favorite to secure victory. Iaquinta was the underdog with odds of +525, these odds may also me listed as fractional (5.25/1) or decimal (6.25). That tells you that a $100 stake would generate a $525 profit. Khabib was -700 to win the fight, and a minus symbol indicates how much you would need to wager in order to win $100. So $700 at -700 (0.14/1 or 1.14) would generate a $100 profit. A $100 bet on Khabib at -700 would have returned you a profit of just $14.29. Khabib delivered on his favorite tag, beating Iaquinta via a unanimous decision.

However, many fights are much closer. On the same night, Rose Namajunas started as the +100 (1/1 or 2.0) underdog against Jedrzejczyk, who had odds of -115 (0.87/1 or 1.87) to win. Namajunas won the fight, any anyone that backed her to do so doubled their money.

UFC Method of Victory Betting
Choosing the method of a fighter’s victory typically earns you far more attractive odds than simply choosing who will win. If you wanted more value on Khabib in that fight against Iaquinta, you could have bet on him to win via a decision and earned a much bigger payout. If he had won by knockout or submission, your bet would have been a loser, so it is a risky bet, but it carries a greater reward.
UFC Total Rounds Betting
This allows you to predict whether or not the fight will go the distance, without having to choose which fighter will win. If you bet on over 2.5 rounds, you are saying the fight will go the distance, and if you bet on under 2.5 rounds you are saying it will finish before the 2min 30sec mark in the final round. The odds on each outcome will vary depending on how closely matched the fighters are and their respective knockout records. An alternative option is to bet on over or under 1.5 rounds. This allows you to choose whether or not the fight will be over before the halfway point of the second round.

UFC Round Betting
This involves betting on whether the fight will end in the first, second or third round. If you are unsure which fighter will win, but you think it will be over quickly as they are both powerful and explosive, you could back Round 1.
UFC Winner, Round and Method of Victory Betting
If you thought Chris Gruetzemacher would beat Joe Lauzon, but you were not particularly tempted by the odds on offer, you could bet on Gruetzemacher to win in the second round. That would earn you a far higher payout, as your bet would be bust if he won in the first round, the third round or via a decision. The harder it is to win a bet, the higher the odds you will receive. You could also take it one step further and bet on Gruetzemacher to win via a knockout in the second round. If he were to win by a submission, your bet would lose. You are essentially putting in another stipulation in order to make life harder for yourself and earn a higher potential payout.
UFC Prop Betting
These are special bets that do not necessarily relate to the outcome of a single UFC match. A common prop bet for UFC is betting on which bout will be named Fight of the Night. At UFC 223 in Brooklyn, the bout between Zabit Magomedsharipov and Kyle Bochniak took that honor, so it often pays to look beyond the main event. You can also bet on markets like who will be awarded Knockout of the Night, Submission of the Night and Performance of the Night, ensuring there are plenty of options to keep you entertained throughout the card. In Europe, you can even request your own bets with traders on a variety of different specific outcomes within the fight, and that might be the next evolutionary step for US sportsbooks as the market matures.
